The Ninjas' Parents each have unique backstories and roles. Ray and Maya, formerly the Elemental Masters of Fire and Water, had children (Kai & Nya) who inherited their Elemental Powers. Jay was raised by his loving adoptive parents, Ed and Edna Walker, who taught him valuable life skills at their Junkyard. Dr. Julien was a kind-hearted Inventor who built Zane as a companion and treated him as his Son, instilling in him the core purpose to "protect those who cannot protect themselves". Cole's Father, Lou, is a cheerful Song-and-Dance Man who initially wanted Cole to follow in his performing footsteps, leading to some early conflict. Cole's Mother, Lilly, was the brave former Elemental Master of Earth who died from an illness but passed her powers and a legacy of standing up for justice on to her Son. Lloyd's Father is the Villainous Lord Garmadon, and his Mother is the Archaeologist Misako. The tangled past of Lloyd's parents and Garmadon's change of heart are central to Lloyd's fate as the foretold Green Ninja.
